This deeply moving story emerges from the terrifying silence of loss. A riveting memoir about a son's suicide and his hard-fought struggle to beat the odds, here, also, is a timeless story of spiritual courage. Finding an illuminating thread when "grief is at the wheel" is a rocky path fraught with innumerable setbacks, yet, the author persists. "The deeper life story is personal, yet, universal. Seek it diligently," Hickman advises.

Sensing her son's suicide at 27 is actually pointing to the intense challenges of the human condition, the author considers her son's struggle to find meaning and purpose in a chaotic world that serves up escape, excitement, and excess as "solutions." Do we understand the profound role of addiction in society, or why this age-old problem assumes an endless variety of destructive, life-threatening forms?

Since her son's death is a mystifying, but forceful, catalyst, the author finds a way to unearth the deeper story of loss via the greatest life mysteries, and she is persistent despite a world that says "there is no time." By staying true to the experience, the author commits to the "long view" instead of succumbing to generic cultural standards. The unknown, Hickman notes, becomes intensely personal and urgent with staggering change. "We all need," she adds, "courage and passion to explore painful realities."

Each life is a reflection of the many mysteries we are born into. Mysteries lodged in silence. And ambiguity. Yet this story penetrates that silence, as the author initially survives its fierce echo after her son's sudden death, and then realizes she must, one day, embrace it. Hickman readily admits, however, that she wasn't remotely prepared for the curious demands of loss. But then, who is, she wonders. "Like a prairie windmill silenced by time, life felt heavy and still."

Stepping beyond the personal dimension, Hickman considers the complexities of the human experience, the ways in which we struggle to understand something of our lives. Articulating challenges faced at some point by every family, every individual, the author shines a bright and compassionate light on the complex problems and opportunities of contemporary existence.

"As a mother who lost a young daughter, I understand the "silence of morning"―a gutting reminder with nowhere to hide, but also a space to keep sacred and process. Though time has elapsed since Charlotte's loss, her memory―her essence―still comes to me through these mysterious layers of silence."
―Sukey Forbes, The Angel in My Pocket

"Despite a crushing loss ... here we have a warmth of spirit, understanding and compassion in a distancing world."
―Madeline Sharples, Leaving the Hall Light On

" ... the author gives us an insightful and candid memoir after the suicide of her son at 27. 'Grief was at the wheel' in this telling, but so are wisdom and discovery. At its center lies heartfelt candor in a lyrical voice in praise of life."
―Mary L. Tabor, WHO BY FIRE

"... here is much meaning, peace, and - yes - hope."
―John DeDakis, novelist, editor, and teacher

"... the gift of a spiritual seeker's brave inquiry."
―Richard Gilbert, Shepherd A Memoir

"Examining the world with narrative grace and balance, Hickman's authorial voice communicates the choppy stuff of life with elegance."
―Jen Knox, After the Gazebo

"... a new path. Holy and beautiful and heartbreaking."
―Susan Hall Pohlman, Halfway to Each Other

The Silence of Morning A Memoir of Time Undone eBook D A Daisy Hickman

D.A. Hickman’s book, THE SILENCE OF MORNING: A MEMOIR OF TIME UNDONE, is beyond revealing. An exquisite account of a young life that ended all too soon, the story includes the events leading up to, including, and the aftermath of her son Matthew’s death by suicide. In the unfolding narrative, the reader steps as close as possible to surviving tragic personal loss and ensuing anguish, without having to possess firsthand awareness or experiential footing.

When the unthinkable happens—a phone call delivers the news of her son’s death—a detonator pin is pulled, causing an emotional implosion that sends shockwaves slamming through Daisy’s being with jagged shards of soul-piercing grief. The unbearable aftermath is like learning to live again without a vital organ, only it’s much more devastating—it’s learning to live again without a son.

Not succumbing to social norms—pat remedies, mind-based attempts at closure, and “getting on with one’s life”—it’s in the hollowed out space that Daisy is able to find solace, strength to process, and slowly and quietly nurtures, curates, and finds herself again.

“Though we bloom briefly, then fade, the universe always returning to itself, when we allow life to touch us deeply, even in sorrow, somehow, it extends our mortal view, and our glory.” —D.A. Hickman

A timeless journey, THE SILENCE OF MORNING: A MEMOIR OF TIME UNDONE offers light where there’s dark, courage where there’s fear, peace where there’s distress, and hope where there’s none.

The Silence of Morning A Memoir of Time Undone eBook D A Daisy Hickman Reviews

The Silence of Morning A Memoir of Time Undone, is a powerful memoir of one mother’s struggle to come to terms with the sudden death of her son. Filled with wisdom and insight, Hickman’s writings can only be described as a prayer, one that comes straight from the center of her broken heart.

The author dives fearlessly into the void created by her loss and does battle with herself, external reality, and all that is unseen. She knows instinctively, even if not consciously, that she is not only searching for answers to life's biggest question and for some kind of palatable acceptance of her loss, but for the meaning of life itself. She is searching for the voice of her soul.

Hickman asks the hard questions, not only about why such things happen in life, but the part that our culture plays in helping to create an environment where addiction, depression and suicide assault our young. Her writing is beautiful and poetic. Her wisdom and strength come through on every page.

This is an important book. It's a book that looks beneath the surface of so many issues, while at the same time providing a perfect example of the benefit of wrestling with our pain and loss. If you've lost a loved one, or suffered heartbreak of any kind, you will want to take the time to read The Silence of Morning. My suggestion would be to read it slow and thoughtfully. Read it reflectively, or read it through a couple of times. It will make you think. I promise.
Author D.A. Hickman and I are soul mates. Both of us lost sons to suicide at age 27. Mine by box cutter, her beloved Matthew by a gun shot. Both of us were left devastated and paralyzed for months and years afterward.

I found Hickman’s new memoir, The Silence of Morning a Memoir of Time Undone, beautifully written and hopeful. Her juxtaposition of the raw facts of Matthew’s childhood and young adult life that led to his addictions and the spiritual path she takes to quell her grief will provide anyone who has experienced such an unthinkable loss a lighted way to peace.
Daisy A. Hickman's poignant and breathtaking memoir, The Silence of Morning A Memoir of Time Undone, reads more like a glorious literary meditation than the important memoir it reveals itself to be. She gives us a raw, sometimes painful glimpse into her life dealing with the drug addiction and eventual suicide of her beloved son, Matthew. Although terrifying to read (for any parent), we gingerly follow Hickman on this heart wrenching journey through personal Hell and into profound spiritual healing. And we're rewarded for our courage! Hickman bursts the stereotypes of time, drug addiction, and grieving, allowing us to see life and death from a deeper and more genuine perspective. I highly recommend this important book not only to the families of suicide victims but also to people with drug addicted family members and to those who've lost a loved one to any cause. If you or anyone you know is going through such a loss, this book is for you.
I read this book last year after a similar tragedy happened in the family of a close friend. It's taken this long to let it all hit home and find a place of comfort to understand what a gift it is to those who love and grieve. Hickman's writing style seemed unpleasant a year ago -- sometimes lyrical, at others choppy and seemingly unpolished. Now that I'm at a safe distance, I read it again and can see how she let her changing writing styles speak for the turmoil she refused to wallow in with self-pity. I have tremendous respect for the craftsmanship of this book, and admiration for a woman of incredible strength to endure and give hope to others. This book breaks the heart and terrifies the soul. The writer gently closes those wound and eases the discomfort as she takes you on her journey of the most profound love anyone can ever experience. By the end of the book, the reader feels uplifted. And, yes, even joy. I wish I'd not been so afraid of Hickman's journey a year ago and allowed myself to fall into her story.
